Robots with Becker dress packs — Spot Welding application

Spot welding is the hardest duty a dress pack does. The gun draws heavy current and coolant, the cell runs a high shot count, and every weld throws spatter at the hoses routing past it. Cable failure is the leading cause of unexpected downtime in a robotic line, and a spot-welding cell is where it shows up first.

What the application demands

  • Primary conductors sized for welding current, with fine-strand construction that survives constant flexing
  • Coolant supply and return that can be monitored rather than discovered when the floor is wet
  • Spatter protection where the pack passes the gun and the workpiece
  • Strain relief that holds the cable package at the right point on every axis, not just at the base
  • A change-out that can be done inside a maintenance window

How Becker builds for it

The pack

Carried spot welding is one of the applications the Complete Dress Pack and the LHMS were designed around. The LHMS is a closed, sealed architecture developed with FANUC, with no robot-specific adjustment needed and a documented mean time to repair of fifteen minutes or less for a carried spot welding configuration — which is the difference between a dress pack change inside a break and one that costs a shift.

Spatter and heat

Leather protection sleeves cover the sections that sit in the spatter path, and are replaceable without stripping the pack. Corrugated tube, protectors and clamping rings are specified for the heat the cell actually produces rather than a catalogue average.

Retraction

RoboRoc keeps the package clear of the fixture through the weld sequence using a fail-safe compressed spring in a closed chamber — no air supply to lose, nothing to re-tension every month.

The rest of the cell

Because Becker also supplies the tip conditioning and the coolant monitoring, a spot welding cell can come from one source: the dress pack that feeds the gun, the tip dresser and changer that keeps the electrode geometry true, and Cool Control, which reports a lost cap in about 300 milliseconds.
