Robots with Becker dress packs — Laser Welding application

Laser welding moves the difficulty from current to precision. The optic is heavy, the fibre will not tolerate being treated like a cable, and the process head usually carries its own cooling, cover gas, crossjet air and a seam-tracking sensor. Everything the robot carries has to arrive at the head without changing the tool centre point.

What the application demands

  • Fibre routed above its minimum bend radius through the whole envelope, not just at rest
  • No torsion transmitted into the optic or its connector
  • Cooling and cover gas delivered at stable pressure with the head at full extension
  • Sensor and camera cabling with enough flex life to match the fibre
  • A package that does not shift the centre of gravity of an already heavy tool

How Becker builds for it

Routing the fibre

The pack is designed around the fibre’s bend radius as a hard constraint, with the simulation run before the first bracket is made. Becker has built dress packs for cells using laser sources and process heads from Trumpf, Scansonic and Intelliweld, so the mounting interfaces and the slack management are not being worked out for the first time on your line.

Keeping torsion out

Axis-6 brackets are made for the specific robot flange rather than adapted, which fixes the package orientation at the wrist and keeps rotation out of the optic. Where the path demands more travel than the wrist should absorb, a retraction system takes it instead.

Media and data

Cooling, cover gas and crossjet air run in hose rated for the spatter and the heat around the keyhole. Seam tracking and camera feedback run on Connectronix high-flex data cable. Where the cell uses a vision or seam-tracking system, Becker integrates the manufacturer’s system — we supply the hardware and the routing, not the vision software.
