Self-piercing rivet setting is a mechanical joining process that has become standard wherever aluminium and mixed materials meet, and it puts two unusual demands on a dress pack: a rivet feed that must never jam, and a tool heavy enough that the cable package has to be kept genuinely clear of the C-frame.

How Becker builds for it

Rivet feed protection

Becker makes a dedicated rivet-feed protection program: hose connectors in the diameter combinations the feeders use, Teflon-lined protective hose for the low-friction bore the rivet needs, and spring-wire reinforced hose where the line has to hold its shape through motion. These are stocked items, not specials.

Around the C-frame

The routing is planned in simulation against the actual frame geometry, because a self-piercing rivet tool reaches around the part and the pack has to stay out of that arc at every point of the cycle — not just at the taught positions.

Setting systems

Becker has dressed cells built around the self-piercing rivet systems in general automotive use, including Henrob, Böllhoff and Stanley equipment. The interfaces, the feed hose sizes and the clamping arrangements are established rather than improvised.

Riveting alongside other joining

Mixed-material bodies rarely use one joining process. A line that sets rivets usually also flow-drill screws and adhesively bonds, and the dress packs for all three are better specified together — see screwdriving, clinching and gluing and sealing.
