Robots with Becker dress packs — Clinching application

Clinching joins sheet without heat, filler or a fastener — the tool simply forms an interlock. That makes the process clean, but it does not make the dress pack easy: the tool is heavy, the forces are high, and the robot has to reach into the same awkward positions a rivet tool does, repeatedly, for years.

What the application demands

  • A package that clears a deep tool frame at every point of the cycle
  • Supply sized for the forming force, whether hydraulic or servo
  • Strain relief that survives the shock of each forming stroke
  • Routing that does not fatigue at the wrist under short, repetitive moves
  • Predictable service intervals, because the cell rarely has a spare

How Becker builds for it

Built for the shock load

A clinching stroke is a sharp mechanical event and the pack feels it. Clamping rings are specified per core diameter so each conductor is held at its own size, rather than the whole bundle being squeezed by one ring — which is what causes the slow migration and eventual break at the strain-relief point.

Around the tool

Tool geometry drives the routing, and the routing is proven in simulation before anything is built. Where the reach and the return path cannot both be accommodated, a retraction system manages the slack rather than letting the pack find its own way.

Tooling systems

Becker has built dress packs for clinching cells using TOX tooling, which is the system most commonly specified in European automotive production.

Why it often sits with other processes

Clinching is usually one station in a joining sequence rather than a line on its own. Specifying its dress pack together with the neighbouring riveting and screwdriving stations keeps corrugated tube sizes, protectors and clamping rings common across the cell, which is what makes the spares holding sensible.
